A book exploring the issue of class in America as a highly stratified system of identification, using content from the New York Times series Class Matters, twelve interviews with subjects focusing on American experiences of class in relation to issues such as health, marriage, education, and religion. The source material is overlayed into magazine layouts from publications such as Health, Elegant Bride, Yale Alumni News, and Today's Christian, whose original purpose was to cover topics related to the article. The book is constructed to reveal the different formats as layers within a stack: as readers progress through the text, their position in the stack is tracked by a photograph in cross-section on the left hand page and the changing edges of other magazines on the right hand page.
